Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create sustainable support systems
It’s World Breastfeeding Week – an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and supporting parents.
This year’s theme, Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create sustainable support systems, highlights the importance and long-term benefits of hospital and community structured collaborations in supporting breastfeeding mothers.
Katy Hunt, Clinical Midwife Consultant, Lactation Services, provides breastfeeding information, education and advice across the district. She leads reaccreditation for the Royal Hospital for Women’s Baby Friendly Health Initiative and runs antenatal clinics and classes to support families before and after birth. She also trains midwives and clinicians to ensure mothers are met with knowledgeable, compassionate care.
“Breastfeeding isn’t something mothers should have to figure out alone. What really matters is having skilled, consistent support systems in place,” said Katy.
Breastfeeding is natural, but for many new mothers, it doesn’t always come easily. The right support can make all the difference.
“It’s not about telling them what to do – it's about giving them the tools, information, and support they need to decide what’s right for them and their baby.”
